The Toronto & York Region Labour Council has an opening for a permanent position on its small and dynamic staff team. Reporting to the President, the successful candidate will lead and implement the Council’s communications programs and presence, contribute to strategic oversight and content development, manage related data, and support our diverse campaigns.
This role is suitable for a pro-active and creative pace-setter with significant communications experience who is comfortable working as part of a small inter-dependent staff team.

You are successful when you:
- Manage, execute, and evaluate the Council’s communications and advertising strategy and deliverables within it
- Proactively plan and shape communications, including creative input
- Manage and implement day-to-day communication program needs
- Support Council campaigns and events proactively or under direction of other staff
- Act as editor of Labour Action (the Council’s quarterly magazine) and our weekly electronic newsletter, including managing and producing content proactively or under direction
- Direct contracted communications work
- Conduct media relations
- Manage all digital assets
- Ensure accuracy of database information and develop strategies on an ongoing basis
- Manage websites and database to build digital organizing capacity
- Guide development of long-range vision for the main website and undertake changes

What you bring to the role:
- Significant communications experience (minimum 3 years, with experience working in a labour, political, or advocacy environment preferred)
- Understanding of labour values and issues affecting working people
- A commitment to the Labour Council’s equity and anti-racism goals
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills (a second language is an asset)
- Ability to write with a critical class, gender, and equity lens and have a deep, nuanced understanding of theories of social change
- Ability to balance professional and activist approaches
- Strategic thinking skills combined with an ability for hands-on technical work
- Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail
- Experience working with and/or staffing committees, and especially with equity-seeking groups
- Ability to use full Microsoft Office suite, Nationbuilder, WordPress and Action Network, and social media channels including analytics
- Fluency in cloud-based apps like Canva, G-Suite, Zoom, etc.
- Ability to design simple and effective audio/visual campaigns for a variety of media (digital and print)
- Experience with media, including news releases and pitching stories
- Adept at coordinating multiple time-sensitive projects and deadlines
- Punctual, efficient, self-motivated and flexible
- Ability to work independently in a fast paced and results-oriented environment
- Excellent interpersonal skills and able to work in a collaborative environment
- Evidence of leadership and initiative, tact, diplomacy, and creativity
- Willingness and ability to be available outside of normal working hours when required

The starting rate for the position is $1,479.17 per week (currently under negotiation) and a generous benefits package is provided.
