The Toronto & York Region Labour Council is seeking a permanent organizer to work as part of the leadership and staff team in a dynamic and fast-paced organization that is responding to a changing economy and new political realities in Canada’s largest urban centre. Reporting to the President, the successful candidate will play a role in all aspects of the Council’s work in both Toronto and York Region, including political action, building union strength, the development of networks of union activists around key campaign goals, and other duties as assigned.
The role is suitable for a pro-active, articulate, and hands-on and detail-oriented individual who can bring people together to achieve common goals. The individual would have experience in organizing, knowledge of the labour movement, and be comfortable working as part of a small interdependent staff team.
Travel within the region will be required. The successful candidate is also able to work evenings and weekends when required.

- Provide support to deliver an ambitious campaign portfolio.
- Offer strategic advice and recommendations about potential new campaigns.
- Lead and/or coordinate campaigns, events and activities that result in effective political action, building union strength, and achieving other key campaign goals.
- Develop and sustain effective relationships with affiliates and other key groups and individuals.
- Communicate effectually about campaigns, activities and events.
- Support staff, committees and diverse worker networks to achieve their internal goals, and contribute to the organization and overall activities.
- Work in a manner that reflects the Labour Council’s core values, working for justice “in our workplaces, in our politics, and in our world.”
What you bring to the role:
The successful candidate will have extensive experience in union, political or community organizing and a good knowledge of the labour movement. They must have strong interpersonal skills, be able to work as part of a small interdependent team, be committed to the equity and anti-racism goals of the Council, and be able to carry out their work with a minimal amount of supervision.
The successful candidate will develop work plans, and report regularly on the progress and barriers to their work plan. Fluency in a second language will be an asset.
